If your kitchen is in need of a facelift, but so is your bank account...then why not try something else? Why not paint your cabinets?
If your cabinets are solid enough, and not falling off the wall, then they can be painted. There are so many new and improved products on the market to make this a more enjoyable task. At one time you would have had to sand them right down, and that alone is a huge mess. But not anymore, you can get "de-shiners", or primers that can go over any surface to make them ready for paint, you don't have to use strippers any more!
You need to allow yourself some time, such as a weekend. Try taking the cabinets and hardware off during the week, and then reserve the weekend for painting. The best results in painting are obtained, if you put your top color on as soon as the primer is dry, you can't be waiting days for this, or a dust layer will form, and you will not get a good finish, so allow yourself the time to get all the painting done.
But no matter what you choose to do, the most important part of this whole procedure is to clean the cabinets first. Using a mild cleaner, and then rinsing and making sure they are dry. Its probably best if you take the cabinet doors off the bases, and remove the hardware. If you are not going to replace the hardware, make sure you label it when you take it off.
But this would also be a great time to replace the hardware, you will be amazed the difference it can make to a kitchen with new knobs and hinges and draw pulls. That alone can make a huge improvement.
There are many great pieces of hardware for your cabinets, in stores and online, and you can get some pretty unique ones. Depending of the style or look you are going for in your kitchen. You can also do some rubber stamping on your cabinet doors after, just to add some interest. You can get a great assortment of rubber stamps online, or stencils.
Painted cabinets, and new hardware, can freshen up a kitchen, and will last a long time, you may never get around to that renovation after all!...
